These Tibetan Buddhist monks are tediously creating the Green Tara sand mandala. Last week it was the World Peace mandala. At week's end it was swept away and poured into the Mississippi River so that blessings and healing may flow throughout the world.

The World Peace Mandala on the left was created one grain of sand at a time by the Drepung Gomang Tibetan monks.
After the closing ceremony in which the mandala was dismantled, only this little pile of sand remained. It symbolizes the impermanence of all that exists, creates awareness of our attachment and suffering, and generates social healing.
